Ornithopter

Ornithopters have been tried since before manned flight, with varying sucess. However, rubber powered and even radio controlled ornithopters have flown.

A recent development has been this free flight servo flapping ornithopter.  The servos are used to move the wings and the flight parameters are set from a mobile phone app. I think this is excellent.

Tempo profiler 

Freeflight timers have traditionally been used to bring a flight to an end by triggering a dethermaliser. With electric powered models, this has progressed to flight profilers that control not just the duration of a flight but the power and duration of the motor over the course of the flight. One such device, called the  Tempo uses a phone app or an external controller device to set a program for the flight.
