Indoor flying
Calm, warm air, irrespective of the weather, what's not to like? It is a rewarding challenge - not least to avoid the walls.
Gyminnie Cricket
A simple model, but one that can be adapted for long flight durations.
No kits of the Gyminnie Cricket are available, but it is easy to build from plans to print out on A4 or on A3 from the Peterborough site. The prop assemblies are the only part currently difficult to find - but an aluminium tube to take the propshaft, set below the fuselage stick with a piece of balsa is a better alternative.
The popularity of this model is due to how easily it can be modified and improved. Competitions have been run where the only stipulation is that the PLAN VIEW has to remain unchanged. So, you can't increase the wingspan, chord or length, but you can use thinner wood, change the pylon to stick supports and change the propeller.
Real duration models
By building light, delicate models flights in excess of 30 minutes can be made - given the right space to fly. Have a look at the Indoor Technical site for some idea of what is possible.
